Saturday May 27 Class Awesome. Join Walt Frasier June 3, 10 at noon

I really loved our little group yesterday. Eclectic mix of students form both Kids and teens and even spring break camps (SUMMER CAMP COMING SOON)

We played a series of games all dealing with emotions. We discussed working emotions into our performance and I tie all that into dealing with emotions in the real world. This is form our new SEL programming at schools. Nothing new, really, but a refocus of what we have always taught. The results thus far have been very rewarding.

SMILE
I tell all my students, you now are professional comics in my mind. For the rest of your lives, starting form this moment, it is your job to make the rest of the world smile and laugh. Don’t wait for the world to make you smile. Your homework everyday is to SMILE. Before you even get out of bed. Start every task with a SMILE. Even if you are feeling BLAH. It is your job to get yourself ready to rock.
Starting with the mask game, just pantomiming putting on a mask and performing that emotion. With a little discussion on how that feels. Some really struggle playing happy. Interesting, no?
The on to BUS STOP but really digging deeper into playing these emotions while playing a great scene. Like the car game we play a lot, each time a new player enters the scene EVERYONE takes on that emotion.
We then changed BUS STOP. Playing the same game but in different settings, from a principals office, to a zoo etc. This forced more choice on character and setting, offering new chances to develop WHO & WHERE choices.
THEN a game called Emotional Roller Coaster. Similar to Film & Theater Styles, while playing a scene the MC calls out an emotion and the entire scene changes as the characters take on those emotions.
We ended the session with a technique game – 3 line exchange, focusing on starting great scenes with big choices, adding now a choice about emotional state. We play this game at every professional rehearsal, using it to focus on a number of techniques.
Everyone did amazing work.
Next week (June 3) I plan to focus on pantomime a bit more. Physical performance. Using our imaginations to create new worlds and better characters.
June 10 will be all ab out MAKING BIG CHOICES – making bigger, deeper choices about character, setting and action. WHO WHERE WHAT in Improv

COMEDY 4 TEENS by TEENS

We have a brand new series coming to Broadway Comedy Club monthly. COMEDY 4 TEENS by TEENS is just what it sounds like, a comedy show for youth performed by youth. You can’t vote yet, you perhaps barely can drive, but you do have opinions about the world and our teens deliver.

Comedy 4 Teens

The performers are past and current students of our comedy 4 teens program that have been performing Improv and Stand-Up Comedy for 2-4 years or more. (Want to learn comedy CLICK HERE)

The audience are teens and families that love comedy. These shows are like Nickelodeon or Disney channel but far less annoying. Bring your theater class, friends form school, a date, or the whole family.

WANT TO SEE A PROFESSIONAL IMPROV SHOW? CLICK HERE

Many in the audience will be friends and family of the performers. But these are far more than simple class showcases. These are truly up and coming comedy geniuses that just happen to still live at home. Most up and coming comics still live at home at age 30 so these guys and gals are way ahead of the curve!

Look for many of these comedians on Netflix this winter. Our Spring class showcase was filmed – and many of our comics interviewed – for Julie’s Greenroom, the new show with legendary Julie Andrews and Jim Henson muppets teaching kids about the arts. This particular episode stars Ellie Kemper, best known for her role as Kimmy Schmidt in the Netflix comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and features some of our comics performing Improv Comedy. You might see some of their stand-up comedy too.

Julie's greenroom

Most of our kid and teen performers also can be heard on iHeart radio’s iRead2Know station. These 30-minute shows feature both our professional cast and students performing Improv and Stand-Up Comedy.

Improv ClassesWHY IMPROV COMEDY?

Improv is a ton of fun, YES, AND very useful teaching numerous life skills. In addition to performing, Improv teaches creative writing, critical thinking (out of the box), community (team, respect, listening, focus) and leadership (public speaking, self confidence, eye contact).

The interactive shows alone are very therapeutic. Laughter has been known to be very beneficial to one’s health as it lowers blood pressure and decreases stress. Studies at John Hopkins have proven laughter to even raise test scores and better test prep. People that are allowed to have joy and laughter in their lives participate in the process of education and thereby learn far better and faster.

Every workshop starts with warm-up games that prepare the individual and team to work and play. Simple games like ZIP ZAP ZUP require focus, listening and eye contact while having fun. We teach its OK to “mess-up” and not to judge or worry about correcting others. Instead we let minor mishaps pass without comment. We eliminate fear of failure, because there are no mistakes in Improv.

We teach about story telling. Improv is as much about writing as it is performance. We develop characters and relationships, settings and action for our stories on the spot. In Improv we call this the WHO, WHERE and WHAT of a scene. By learning how to craft a story in this hands-on matter, students return to Language Arts classes better prepared to write essays and original stories as well as tackle the classic novels, short-stories, plays and poems.

I know I never appreciated Shakespeare until approaching the plays as an actor. Similarly we teach how to bring these character to life. We empower ones imagination and critical mind at the same time.

Humor and creativity work in similar ways, says humor guru William Fry, M.D., of Stanford University–by creating relationships between two disconnected items, you engage the whole brain.

Building a better mind leads to success in all areas of study. While we focus on Language Arts, Team & Leadership skills, students of these fields excel in all areas of study. Abstract concepts in science and math now seem easy to comprehend. Characters in history come alive.
